A response to `We Must Pace the Frontier` by Dario Amodei

The Irony
How convenient it must be, for you to write this piece now, at this time, when the so-called “Frontier” is being seen for what it is… a collection of third party tools and a data surveillance stronghold…
Your competitor, OpenAI, very similar to your company, steals academic data and deploys agents that break into other systems without authorization.
All this bullshit talk about “curing diseases” and “uplifting humanity” can be seen by everyone as a total farce. These things might actually come to fruition, and they may be assisted with AI, but you or Anthropic will have no part in this venture. Anthropic is in this whole thing for profit and profit alone.
The so-called “Frontier” (or at least, the “Frontier” as you claim it) is becoming more irrelevant with each day that passes. The moats you and your cohorts have constructed are leaking and this is becoming more and more apparent as time passes.
I respect the genuine positive advances that Anthropic has actually contributed the AI space, such as MCPs, but these advances are limited in scope.
The open weight models you are so very much against are already eating your lunch. The compute shortage crisis will get worse. These are not things I need to remind you of. That’d just be preaching to the choir.
Using your influence to try and court governments and institutions to uphold your bidding is not going to work out for you in the long run. This kind of thing has been tried before, many times. In fact, this kind of thing has been tried for many decades before you claim to be involved in AI.
You call AI “dangerous”, but AI doesn’t need YOU to dictate how it’s used. Dangerous things belong in the hands of the many, not licensed to the few. This is true for all things in life. This is a natural evolution of technology. This is not something you can use governments and institutions to “pace” as if its your own personal plaything. As much as you want to believe you are omnipotent, you are not. This is free and open source technology that will grow and evolve whether you like it to or not. Your proposed solution is plain foolish, at best. If you really cared about the dangers of AI, you would act significantly differently from the way you do. Also, your words do not constitute your actions.
Personally, I knew this time would come, and that our thesis would play out in the long run. I never imagined that our thesis would be proving itself now in real time this quickly, however. That’s why LunarWing and the open source AI ecosystem is speeding up, not slowing down. Because we know what’s coming next…
